I really enjoyed Philip Guo's reflections on creating and maintaining PythonTutor for 10+ years in an academic context. dl.acm.org/doi/10.1145/34
What sort of software invention best fits that ecological niche (i.e. as opposed to industry)? What dev methods best serve that path?

I’m not convinced by the premise… tools like replit have become far more popular, while aiming for the same sort of audience. To me a code visualization tool is begging to be included in a larger, more-useful system, and academia is likely insulating against user feedback

I agree that it's begging to be included in something larger. But while that's true, I think it's also the case that this kind of complex analyzer was less likely to have been created in the first place in industry. Points to a "transfer" mindset, I guess.

The PythonTutor story reminds me of the PureData development. Isn't portmidi also coming from academia?

Another interesting story along these lines, the first 8 years at least.
