Does anyone have experience with the OpenStax textbooks? I'm particularly interested in any observations about how they compare to the "canonical" texts in a given field.

Still consensus naturally. But definitely not regressive or stale. At least in the humanities and political science.

I use them as the core of a textbook Imthat I have put together with more primary and secondary sources.

Thanks, that's really helpful. Separately from the question of consensus/radical/outdated, how's the quality of the writing, compared to best texts available?

Since they are a large collaborative endeavor, I could only speak the the history and political science texts. I like them because they are a good mix of narrative/anecdote and analysis. Sections break down with effective headings and sub headings.

They tend to be theme heavy - which I like - deemphasizing chronology as a micro organizing principle. Compared to “leading” texts it is on par or better IMHO.
