What are the best textbooks (or comprehensive primers) which are freely available online? Ideally as web content, not as PDF.

I like jakevdp.github.io/PythonDataScie , doc.rust-lang.org
(Common themes are including some aspects of the domain in the "book"). I wonder what a biology textbook in this fashion would look like!

What do you mean by "including some aspects of the domain in the book"?

Including actual Rust (or python code) snippets that you can run if you wanted to.
Also, the Rust book explains common mistakes (why they happen, what to do), which is not that frequent but very helpful

Broadly, wanted to open that as a theme: Have you encountered interesting reads on teaching mistakes? Instead of teaching X, teaching the "negative space around X", ways to do X wrong, ways to recover from mistakes etc

Gosh, what a great question. "The Non-Designer's Design Book" has a lot of this type of content, but it's not quite what you're asking for. I love the concept—seems particularly well suited to tacit domains.
There's research evidence surrounding teaching with mistakes for algebra, for example:

And a supplemental curricular resource from these researchers:
