Irony in Feynman's preface to the print copy of his Lectures: "It’s impossible to learn very much by simply sitting in a lecture, or even by simply doing problems that are assigned. But…we have so many students to teach that we have to try to find some substitute for the ideal."

It’s true, not optimal. However, if students took the time to properly prime themselves with the material before the lecture, they’d be able to make much better use of the lectures. Instead of mindlessly copying notes, you have more time for encoding material into chunks.

Amusingly enough, in the instance of Feynman's lectures, the students didn't *have* any material to prep themselves with before lecture—the book was being written live! :)
