Worth including "the ideal": "a direct individual relationship between a student and a good teacher—a situation in which the student discusses the ideas, thinks about the things, and talks about the things."

It’s true, not optimal. However, if students took the time to properly prime themselves with the material before the lecture, they’d be able to make much better use of the lectures. Instead of mindlessly copying notes, you have more time for encoding material into chunks.

Amusingly enough, in the instance of Feynman's lectures, the students didn't *have* any material to prep themselves with before lecture—the book was being written live! :)
