when learning a new concept, I usually prefer direct description over metaphor. yet a lot of people seem to like metaphors when learning.
I wonder about the relative benefits of learning-usage of metaphor vs mnemonic-usage of metaphor. I generally *do* want mnemonics!

but the best mnemonic for a concept likely isn't the same as the best learning-metaphor for it. and I think most authors include only a learning-oriented metaphor.

have you thought about this distinction in your study of mnemonic media?

Yes; I often write prompts about both.

have you studied whether there's any value to remembering learning-metaphors? I think of them like the ladder you use and then kick away behind you, while mnemonics continue to be useful

Haven't read any serious empirical study here, but my personal experience is that the metaphors remain very useful long-term.
