Maybe not quite the same, but the Mars trilogy by Kim Stanley Robinson comes to mind. Plenty of detailed descriptions like these on the systems built to colonize and terraform another planet.

Kim Stanley Robinson's Red Mars has some very evocative lines. Red Mars deals extensively with the tension between buidl and preserve movements, though it does set them up as a dichotomy.
