Great question: "What design process could take you from Roman numerals to Hindu-Arabic numerals?" The beginning of an answer could starts with : "lot of free time, lots of knowledge, lots of practical / hands-on experience in the matter, and willingness to scratch an itch..."

I am not sure horizontal navigation of history is necessary, even if innovative, I have something simpler in mind regarding the ui: it would be up to user to build the ux that builds upon a small common shared understanding.
