Of all the PDF viewers on macOS, it seems only and support marginal comments, GDocs-style. I wonder why it's so rare.

Is there a standard format for this? Can't we spin up a nice parallel markup file to contain marginal comments with links to specific bits of the pdf?
(The pdf spec is notoriously painful - likely why so few support comments)

Wow fragment selectors are not ... elegant. Wonder what a designed for 2021 PDF like format would look like. Strange what standards become the fixed points we work with. LaTeX is not much better fwiw.

Yeah. You can at least use text quote and text position selectors with PDFs, too, but you're not wrong. Still: I think the format is a drag on progress, but probably not the key blocker. Suspect the latter is more likely to be the lack of a way to profit from UI innovation here.
