Often feels like a contradiction, but I think both a) digital reading is mostly much worse than physical reading; and b) literally translating physical affordances is probably not the right way to make digital reading much better.

Do you think that digital reading is also worse from performance stand point? Something like worse comprehension, or shorter retention.

Yes, probably, except insofar as it promotes writing while you read. Some notes here:

Is this post in reference to your particularly active style of reading / note-taking, or do you think digital reading is worse for almost all readers?

I don't know. "Serious reading" of any kind.

I think one key hurdle is today devices have too little screen real estate compared to, say, a real desk. Maybe recreation would work magic with a slightly bigger Surface Studio.
Yes, absolutely. It's really the only interesting work in the space in a decade, unfortunately.

I have a Google Scholar alert for new citations of @CraigTashman's 2011 LiquidText paper, but alas there have only been a couple high-quality cites. I just can't get over how little has been added to those ideas in the past decade!

I wish someone would work on this problem! I don’t suppose it’s on your own future project list is it, as you’re focused on other priorities?

Probably not.
