Why are there no "standard texts" on designing software interfaces? (or tell me I'm wrong?) If you want to learn to *build* software, there are excellent and complete texts on the subject. It's not just a tech-vs-art thing: there are standard texts on type, drawing, color, etc.

Ha, looks like I got you thinking on this the other day. Completely agreed, I have yet to come across such a book. The one's I have seen that attempt to do this have been disappointing.

Practicing Designers seem to be disconnected from Academia & historical examples which would provide a rich history to draw from in order to create such a book the designers that go towards the education route seem to take on consulting and speaking more so than writing

Yeah. There's a newer edition than that one, though. Shneiderman in particular is a titan; his work (direct manipulation, treeviz, linked representations, hyperlink styling) has had a huge impact. Plaisant was also quite influential in infoviz, multitouch.
