Why are there no "standard texts" on designing software interfaces? (or tell me I'm wrong?)
If you want to learn to *build* software, there are excellent and complete texts on the subject. It's not just a tech-vs-art thing: there are standard texts on type, drawing, color, etc.

The former is pretty compelling! Thank you.
The latter is troubled, I think, by all the good books on visual/graphic art.
Counter: UI design is still nascent, visual arts have been with us since time immemorial, there's more to codify, and more knowledge on how to codify

Many books on visual graphics / art don't require complex mathematical constraint systems to run on computational logic. Whenever I look at the top of a C header on a GNU/Linux program like "ls", I shiver, knowing how many vars exist to achieve compatibility across platforms.

When you provide the example, "Don't Make Me Think", I am reminded more of a Service Design or HCI book than either an art book or an engineering book.
I have no idea if this book is good, but wonder if the title scratches an itch?
