Concentration meditation sometimes has the vibe of an old tower defense arcade game: trying to detect possible distractions as early as possible so as to fortify attention, a feeling of being beset on all sides, noticing that enemy already past the gate, etc

Funny how this vibe is only possible in so-so sessions. Has to be going well enough to notice subtle distractions before they threaten forgetting, but poorly enough that subtle distractions are still meaningful threats without continuous vigilance.

I think this vibe extends to the compounding return from a meditation practice. Similarly, if you built a solid tower defense, some waves are effortless and you can simply observe your towers defending without needing to build or upgrade.
Nice take Andy, thanks for sharing.

until one moment when it doesn’t and then your inner monologue decides to stop talking for the rest of your life, or you switch from the breath to a tiny pleasurable sensation and are thrown directly into the infinite void of goodness

Is it unusual to not have an inner monologue?

:) The Buddha himself used the fortress metaphor where mindfulness was the gatekeeper and concentration (jhāna) was the food stock inside the fortress (Nagara Sutta AN 7:63).
