My experience of high-budget non-profits is that for the most part, heads-of-orgs have a similar environment to those of for-profits. They have KPIs; they are rewarded for making numbers go up-and-to-the-right. Not directly enough to cue on a 990, but as a "high performer."

They're still scraping to get some title bump ("maybe I can go from VP of X to CXO!"), or a prestige bump ("I get to be on-stage with the founders and do the press interviews!"). Some just min-max because that means winning, and winning feels good.
