Notifications about Twitter lists people add me to ("productivity hacks", "creator economy", "Javascript tips") are powerful visceral reminders of the lurking banality sinkholes around my work.

but they're likley not banal sinkholes to those people! javascript was magical to me when i was starting out (& still is sometimes, in spite of itself)

I really appreciate you making this point. I sometimes miss when programming had that energy for me.

When was the last time you felt the magic?

Hard to say: it's more like a Poisson process with a decaying parameter. I do feel the magic with some regularity, but it stopped being the norm many years ago—probably seven or eight at least.
Was magic truly a consistent norm then? Do you think it’s possible that as we age, the dull memories erode leaving formations of magic like sandstone arches?
(I don’t feel like I have a solid answer to this, but the question occurs to me)

It was a much higher-average Poisson! Probably at least some rose-colored glasses here, though, yes.
