*by "computing environment", think operating system, but more the user interface than the technical layer

I have a copy of New Media Reader - it's beefy! I've read maybe 10%. Any particular essays you'd recommend?

There's a lot of extra annotation and commentary bulking up the page count: each paper is pretty short. I'd suggest just reading one a day for a few weeks, skipping those which don't seem very interesting. You'll be done in a month.
The most important entries in that book are the "obvious ones" mentioned many times in Chris's thread. Some of them (e.g. Augmenting Human Intellect, Nelson's stuff) are excerpts; it's worth reading the full original texts.

Many of these I have in PDF form already queued up on the reMarkable. I'll take your advice and skip the abridged version.
