starting to think we need a new vocabulary for clearly defining depth of research. the fact that years of focused study and a cursory google search are both broadly characterized as "research" is a communication nightmare

Makes me think of how different probability statements in Dutch (ranging from impossible to definitely) are interpreted differently by people.

seeAlso the analyst industry. "The X Market will be Y big in Z years". This usually has a hard maximum forecasting event horizon where Z=30 because after that the unknown unknowns pile up too high. Except for climate change where Z=79, dropping at 1yr per yr.

Analysts particularly like Z>10 because there's no chance they will be found out as everyone has forgotten by then and they've personally moved on to a job with one of their clients.
