I'm grateful for this thoughtful write-up and for all your hard work over the past few years!
I do a lot of self-publishing and appreciate its advantages—but I worry about missing out on archival (esp of interactive bits) & DOIs. Wonder how to solve well in a federated context.

Would "interactive arxiv" do the trick? It could be set up to grant DOIs if needed.
(apparently biorxiv does this, even though math/CS/etc. arxiv does not! academia.stackexchange.com/questions/8158)
