There's a big tension in the mnemonic medium around the locus of control b/w the author and reader.
Too author-centric: prompts can feel forced, not "yours"
Too reader-centric: burdensome, split attention, often yields bad prompts

I love this “Imagine that as you read, some phrases are highlighted in a special way indicating that the author has provided prompts representing that idea.” as it allows easy reversibility to the skip/remove. Therefore it’s lightweight to “pickup more than you think you need”

The tricky bit here of course is that in the setting of an introductory explainer, where you really do want to remember most details, the extra interaction would be quite disruptive.

Yeah, maybe two (subtle) highlighting styles such that one is the on state and one is off, and the pacing of the prompting is still independent of that, then clicking only toggles (except maybe at the very beginning or end like a footnote indicator to get more details right away)
