have you considered representing clozes in a similar fashion as filled-in password prompts? i.e. obscuring the meaning, preserving some of the context (the cloze length + its visual space)

Yes. That was my first approach, since it's certainly more visually graceful that way. But I backed off because I was worried that the visual length may be an undesired cue. I'd like to circle back to this at some point…
