It's astonishing to me how difficult it (still) is to design a syncable local-first data model.

How important do you think this is in the tools for thought ecosystem?

Modestly, but not extremely. Local control over data would encourage more tinkering, I think. And it's important for building something polished enough that people want to use it seriously.
