An interesting interpretation in this paper: many students lack control over their physical environment, can’t make its ambiance the way they want for studying; study-with-me videos let people simulate the “better” ambiance they might want (e.g. of a library).

The interviewees in this paper do shade into a self-coercive frame of motivation that concerns me, pervasive though it might be in formal edu settings (see QT). But I still suspect such videos can be used to create/reinforce more self-actualizing ambiance.

I’m hesitant about this kind of media. It can shade into willpower / motivation porn, particularly when centered on externally-provided curricula. James disavows this ("I don’t believe in motivation. It’s volatile.”), but it’s still there, in part at least.
