Tangent: it’s quite alien to see such intense explicit study for ugrad CS. I did none—no reviewing, no exercises, no written notes. Only murderous problem sets and projects. I think more explicit learning would’ve helped me, but not sure the right balance.

I’m not sure Caltech undergrads (at least the ones in my vicinity) *knew how* to do explicit studying like this. There was a lot of working in public, but I rarely saw anything other than murderous problem sets and projects.

I literally never learned how to actively study throughout my entire schooling career. Just "incorporate data into my intuition" and "quickly skim large sets of facts before closed note exams so some of it is in short term working memory"

I don't even know what people *do* while studying? Is it just ... memorizing stuff through various techniques?

Common practices include retrieval practice, writing summaries, doing practice exercises, trying to notice patterns. Mechanistically, I think this is about creating more durable and well-connected memory traces.
