I've been thinking about 's "Cities and Ambition" as SF reopens. I'm curious: what is Miami's "message"? paulgraham.com/cities.html
Related: I worked from Maui for much of Jan, was startled by how I felt both much more happy/relaxed and yet much less to summon determination.

So far, the suggestion for Miami's "message" which seems most apt is 's "you should be more entertaining / flamboyant." devonzuegel.com/post/field-not
It's a very unfamiliar message! Not yet sure if/how it'll prove compatible with others' ambitions for a new high-tech hub.

Another message that resonates, suggested by : “you should be more shameless.” Sounds (and sometimes is) pejorative, but there are very positive shades! It’s a kind of social/cultural/personal boldness, a variant of good-SF’s willingness to bite the bullet on weird ideas.

I like that the two photos exemplifying someone having an amazing time rollerskating in Miami were both taken in my neighborhood in Berlin 😹

I could see it intersecting interestingly with social and art tech. For example, Miami is full of artists so I could see VR being really big here.
Also the flamboyance comes with a sense that you're actually allowed to try things here. I'm excited to see what comes from that.

To add to that second bit, Miami's flamboyance feels like it's inviting you to try weird stuff! I'm excited to see what happens when that mindset slams into the engineering/builder mindset

Miami’s message is you should be happy/you should enjoy the time you have. This is only incompatible with the popular memes of ambition, it doesn’t have to be incompatible with ambition itself.

Ooh I loved watching Burn Notice and now will have to watch it again. Also: Devon’s notes are so joyous ❤️
