Will be in Miami 04/26–05/02; say hi!
(Impressed at 's ability to will a nebulous convocation into existence with a few hazy tweets)

I've been thinking about 's "Cities and Ambition" as SF reopens. I'm curious: what is Miami's "message"? paulgraham.com/cities.html
Related: I worked from Maui for much of Jan, was startled by how I felt both much more happy/relaxed and yet much less to summon determination.

Andy, if rewrote that essay, what do you think would be SF’s “message” in 2021? (Or maybe in early 2020 to exclude the effect of the pandemic.)

(as of early 2020) I’m sure it varies a lot based on your “scene.” The eavesdropping here is still mostly low-quality, as PG notes. “You should be more powerful” feels to me like roughly the high-order bit in SF, and about the same as in SV. Still some “You should live better.”

Happily, it does feel relatively easy to access scenes here in which “You should be smarter” or “You should be more original” are the key messages. But they’re clearly pretty niche. To riff on PG’s language, the main industry is still startups, not ideas.
One message I treasure in SF, but haven't found elsewhere except east campus MIT, is "You should be weirder". To me, this always felt core to SV hacker culture. If Miami can figure out this message, then it's got something interesting :)

I really treasure that message too, and I wish it were as prevalent here as on East Campus (or in Caltech hovses)
