Will be in Miami 04/26–05/02; say hi!

I've been thinking about 's "Cities and Ambition" as SF reopens. I'm curious: what is Miami's "message"? paulgraham.com/cities.html
Related: I worked from Maui for much of Jan, was startled by how I felt both much more happy/relaxed and yet much less to summon determination.

(In some sense it was quite an ideal working environment! I was by myself, and feral! Had two shirts and a swimsuit. Worked from my balcony from 4-10AM each day, then went to the same spot on the same beach and read/wrote all afternoon, lunch/dinner from the same trucks. Yet…)

Can you elaborate on the 'yet much less to summon determination'?

Yeah, "much less able" or "much less effort"?

Miami's message seems most likely to be:
You made your money in some shady currency mostly used for smuggling money out of China & buying drugs online? Welcome home! Pablo over there made his money in gun running & Ivan over here porn you will fit right in! So glad you are here!
Miami’s message is: we don’t need a lockdown, leave us free to do whatever the hell we want.
Miami’s message is very wild west. Anyone can do anything and we’re here to build
Miami message used to be (question is if tech Che goes this):
Excess capital from low rule of law countries can find safety and pleasure in Miami. The doctors, general contractors, lawyers, restaurants etc serve that capital.
Andy, if rewrote that essay, what do you think would be SF’s “message” in 2021? (Or maybe in early 2020 to exclude the effect of the pandemic.)

(as of early 2020) I’m sure it varies a lot based on your “scene.” The eavesdropping here is still mostly low-quality, as PG notes. “You should be more powerful” feels to me like roughly the high-order bit in SF, and about the same as in SV. Still some “You should live better.”
