If tutors really do reliably produce two-sigma learning gains, then why aren't most top achievers the product of tutors? Yes, they're expensive, but perhaps "only" 2-3x private school; there are a lot of wealthy parents. Diminishing returns for high achievers?

In the post I also say that for high achievers it's less clear if tutoring helps. But maybe the other premise is wrong, maybe they did get good tutoring! Not as kids but coaching for execs and leadership kind of thing.

Right: though that's not really what Bloom's talking about! His tutors are straight-up instructors.
Maybe related: in #econtwitter there was a lot of discussion about how the skills to advance a field (self directed creative inquiry) differ a lot from the skills to learn a field. Maybe there is just a shortage of qualified tutors with both skill sets up at the top of a field?
