If tutors really do reliably produce two-sigma learning gains, then why aren't most top achievers the product of tutors? Yes, they're expensive, but perhaps "only" 2-3x private school; there are a lot of wealthy parents. Diminishing returns for high achievers?

I don't see anyone in comments pointing out that private schools are full of semi-structured tutoring systems. You don't need to hire an additional tutor for your kid -- they get ""free"" 1:1 tutoring by default, both from other kids and teachers.
Would be hard to separate both.

This is a great point. I attended a school small middle/high school (sort of a midwestern Phillips-alike I suppose), and I could get basically as much 1:1 teacher attention as I wanted.
