Interesting that expert mnemonists (e.g. world memory champions) don't seem to be able translate that into "real-world" achievement (e.g. top execs, creatives, etc). IME insight production does seem to depend on my long-term memory performance. Not sure how to account for this.

Unsure about this take. The competitions are geared towards making creative markers between detached information as you said, but then it’s EASIER to do the same for associated information because they have that context from which one can create those markers for long term

Like training for a 100m race, memory champions focus their training on high intensity situations applying these memory techniques so they’re built for that context. But the same techniques (PAO, memory palace, chunking) can be used for developing thoughts over time

For those trained for LTM growth using memory techniques, they use a combination of spaced repetition, creative marker sessions per day and a customised SQ3R (depending on their field) to build that eternal memory palace you’re looking for, to build an evergreen context

Memory champions are too specialised to translate and create output real world contexts because they’ve trained in one specific context. But they CAN and it’s way easier for them to transition to real world contexts, because their foundation for technique at peak performance

A parallel analogy: Isn’t it unfair to measure an Olympic sprinter’s capability by putting them in a non-competitive marathon? 😅 They can train for it a lot easier though I’m sure
