Interesting that expert mnemonists (e.g. world memory champions) don't seem to be able translate that into "real-world" achievement (e.g. top execs, creatives, etc). IME insight production does seem to depend on my long-term memory performance. Not sure how to account for this.

idk what your null hypothesis is here but my null hypothesis is that they became world memory champions because they wanted to do that specifically and not other stuff, so they’re doing that and not other stuff?

Oh, I think the null hypothesis is that such people aren't achievers because the memory skill simply isn't that helpful.

ah yeah that also makes sense! do you have a sense that these memory champions *want* to do other stuff and are blocked on it? idk anything about this but offhand my guess would be that they just love memory for its own sake

I think that’s a wrong mindset — people do sports not because it’s inherently useful but because it’s something they enjoy; memory sports should be no different imo (I know I do it for fun, not because I except it’d help me learn more)
