Goofy noticing: if I watch a lecture video at the speed that feels most comfortable (usually 2-3x) and pause intermittently to write notes + SRS prompts, the total time consumed is roughly equal to the 1x lecture running time (but I’m much more engaged).

I'll semi often watch a lecture a 2x _twice_. I'm more primed for it the second time and it has the same cost.

Right! The challenge here is that re-studying doesn’t support long-term memory encoding very effectively…

Of course! If it's good I write notes/ankify as well.
My point is that I take something different from it the second time. If I could get what I do from the second watching on the first try, then I wouldn't need to watch it again at all.

If I am writing notes on the first watching and the presenter contradicts himself later, or clarifies better, or makes that info redundant, then I wasted time. I won't be fooled by this if I have 'skimmed' it once.
