I feel nothing like an authority here! But IME, one needs the same core skills of inquiry, synthesis, and experiment. Apprenticeship still seems the best path to those. Para-academics can "skip" some teaching/service-related skills, but require extra around distributing own work.

A more specific question--what research resources are available to para-academics re: current/contemporary writing on a given subject? For example, if I want to write about/research/discuss Plato's "Meno" how do I participate and avoid plagiarizing?

well the worry isn't plagiarizing but simply not having your work informed by the best work that's been done--I think you have to find a way to access books and article databases, but I don't know how you do that.
