If you use Anki, 's article on writing good prompts is excellent; after 5y I picked up a bunch of useful techniques. If you don't, check out the introductory anecdote about cooking to see the value.

Thanks for writing it. You're really thorough here (in all your articles, really). On the flip side (heh): do you have an opinion on extra info on answers? Eg if card is country -> captial, having map/flag/etc below on that answer, in addition to country->map/etc.

Thanks. I see that strategy as a simple way to promote elaborative encoding, which I try to do when prompts seem to need some extra support (more discussion in the cues + elaborative encoding section: andymatuschak.org/prompts/#cues-)
