Something fascinating about Twitter: used well it's an immensely powerful tool to think with. But if you look at the mentions of someone famous or powerful you'll see it's hard for them to benefit in this way. It's a rare technology where power actually denies or inhibits access.

Well, yes.
But they have great limitations as tools to think with.
I can ask questions about quantum field theory or molecular biology or Carly Rae Jepsen here, and get answers to all in 5 mins.
Not saying an alt can't do that, but...

Put another way: you co-create your twitter with others.
What gets co-created - and who you co-create with - depends on what you put out there.
And alts by their nature tend to be a slice of personality separate from many of your main interests. So the co-creation is limited.

Interesting to think about alts in terms of this interesting poll: harder to coordinate collaborations/co-authorships if you're using an alt! (Also, people are missing out! Surprised it's 3:1 against)

Academics of twitter, I'm curious if twitter can serve as a space to make new academic partnerships. Have you collaborated on a paper with someone you met on twitter?

Very low ratio!
Alas, I don’t think Twitteracy is going to catch on. We could all be more Twitterate 😁
