Interesting surprise from Studio Culture Now*: most graphic design studios were much less bothered by losing their physical studios during COVID than I’d expect (or, in many cases, than they’d expect!).

One common “cheat”: a number of these studios comprise a married couple (and sometimes an employee or two), with the studio in their home. These folks got to avoid losting their physical studios. But their other responses suggest the pandemic didn’t go especially better for them.

In general, graphic design agency work sounds super brutal—even more so than I’d expected! I feel for these folks.

This is very representative of a certain common graphic design aesthetic—maybe something like "new wave brutalism"?
At the start of the year, when it was taking pre-orders, I was thinking about starting a studio (not a graphic design studio) and thought it would be interesting inspiration. Hard to distill insights from it: it’s more like taking a long walk in a foreign city.
