Odd culture question: I spend time with lots of designers in San Francisco, have lots of connections to various startup design teams, etc. Yet I know zero people at IDEO, the largest design institution in the city & among the largest in the world. Why? A cultural divide? Just me?

my sense is that there is a big separation between the kind of designers who work internally at startups and those that work at consulting companies like IDEO, where the clients are huge corporations

Big design consultancies offer services more upstream like design strategy to the C-level teams of the Fortune 500. In my experience, their designers aren’t focused on shipping product/iterating with users/working with eng in the same way startup designers are.
