I'm not sure the audio books "substantially upgraded" the experience, but I did very much enjoy the "His Dark Materials" audio books. Certainly, they gave a different quality to it - I can still remember many of the voices.

Just finished the trilogy on audiobook—so wonderful! I do think the performers substantially upgraded the books.
I often have trouble connecting to written dialogue in young adult books. It can seem feeble on the page… but when performed by young voices, it works much better!
