I've spent the day reading Clear and Simple as the Truth, and it's wonderful! It makes a useful distinction between "style" and "a style", which allows it to focus on deeper conceptual decisions rather than on surface features like sentence length.

I can see now why Pinker devoted an entire chapter to summarizing it in The Sense of Style.
