In the stage show of "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" Quasimodo is deaf and can't speak clearly (bc bells) but sings beautifully (his "inner voice"). A fascinating 2016 staging cast a deaf actor as Q; he sings in sign as a gargoyle supplies his "inner voice":
