The affordances in this Sudoku software are gorgeous and incredible. Joy that the guy has in solving it is beatiful thing to watch.

Hm… I suspect that part of what makes them special is that they're extremely purpose-built. Maybe they can only be made into generic tools for thought insofar as such tools help narrow communities purpose-build affordances.

I was thinking of things like Cytoscape & igraph for visualizing & manipulating network graphs. Could use some UX work, for sure, but they help people start asking what they could do with graphs in their work.
