After more than a decade of digital nomading, the time has finally come... What kind of dog should we get? Criteria: -No yappy lap dogs -should be mid-sized/athletic -easy to clean up after -good with kids -ok with warm SoCal weather

I suspect you'd end up fine with any easy-going mid-size breed, but I'll plug the golden retriever (assuming you're pretty active). Such a silly, joyful breed! The males are probably larger than you'd like, but the females are plausibly mid-sized: mine's 45lbs.
