Going to try an experiment: livestreaming part of my morning writing today at 9AM PST. I’ll mostly be consolidating some hazy questions from Design Unbound. No live interaction with viewers (hard enough w/o that). Video (probably) available afterwards.https://www.twitch.tv/andymatuschak

Definitely produced a change in consciousness. Reflections: – thinking aloud generated clarity in some moments; slowed me down in others – made me less comfortable sitting with confusion for long periods (that’s bad) – felt nudged towards resolution, speed (mixed bag)

Though some people surprised me by reporting that this was useful, I’m pretty sure it’s nowhere near an efficient frontier for conveying methods. Don’t think I’d repeat this without thinking more carefully about that.

I had to break away at 9:30… I’ve lost my link to your “current notes” page; will you update it with a pointer into this? Also btw I had no video, only a black screen. Maybe problem at my end ( not familiar with twitch)

The tension concerning domain knowledge is one I’ve recently struggled with in wanting to present case studies in meta-rationality. Problem is that it depends on deep embedding in the object level, which in most cases I don’t have, and certainly can’t convey to readers concisely

You like this Bear app?

No, I’m very frustrated with it… but I’m much more frustrated with everything else. :(

Found this extremely helpful & noticed lots of micro things of how I can improve my own work. Really showed me the value of live-streaming as a medium when used sparingly/deliberately (which it generally isn’t). “Watching experts work” should be a more common thing.

The biggest thing I noticed is how little you context switched and how few notes you had open. Maybe because it’s a new topic but I often have several notes open for context and am writing in several new notes at once. This was much cleaner & contained at all times.

Love the format! This is really interesting to me since writing/note-taking seems to be one of those practices where having a coach or guide would be SO helpful, yet nobody does it because it's seen as such an intense, private, individual activity (likely not the only reasons).

Something I find neat is how much of a "conversational" tone your writing takes: you tend to write in the same way that you speak, which so many people don't do. Is that a conscious decision on your part?
