It could be,
@andy_matuschak, that the most important function that books (and essays ;) serve is for the authors themselves.1 reply 0 retweets 3 likesShow this thread -
Replying to @kerrimup @andy_matuschak
The effect of a book is not measured by how many sentences from it you recall. http://paulgraham.com/know.html

Agreed! Recall was meant as an intuition pump in that essay, and I regret not delimiting it more clearly from the central thesis—my failing as a writer. I’m interested in creating mediums which facilitate not simple recall, but rich “knowing" as you describe.pic.twitter.com/r8nWER5rIO

Your remarks on lectures are dead on. There’s a reason most profs don’t do anything different—it breaks the implicit contract that lectures aren’t work. Instead, students learn in problem set groups, and attend lecture if they like it (keeping a phone handy if it gets dull.)

That’s a fascinating point—that there’s an implicit contract that “lectures aren’t work.” It’s an interesting contrast with, say, meditation sessions / team sport practice games etc.
