I’m really frustrated about this because for many Mac apps, this was 16-year-old-me’s fault! A year or two later, I added this badly-designed option to get the “right” behavior, but I made it opt-in—and off by default. Fooishly echoed pre-evergreen browser UX norms.

I’d do roughly what evergreen browsers do! But people found it somewhat creepy to do automatic update checking at all in 2005. Boy have the norms changed on that.
