I can think of lots in which median performance has plausibly fallen, often because progress makes it less relevant—e.g. car maintenance. But in the examples I can think of, virtuosic performance has still risen!

I am grateful for all the earnest attempts to produce examples, but I’m actually really pleased that none of them strike me as terribly compelling! That is a very optimistic outcome! This is an excellent answer:https://twitter.com/JonathanRauch/status/1234720517266886656?s=20 …

I thought this might be right—after all, aren’t Stradivarius violins still the best sounding instruments? But apparently that’s just Brand Myth! https://www.pnas.org/content/111/20/7224 …https://twitter.com/TurtlingB/status/1234714119472730112?s=20 …

Arts generally don't require the level of technical skill they used to. Ariana Grande couldn't hold a candle to Leontyne Price. Similar in painting and sculpture.

Is Ariana Grande the best singer in the world?

Fresco painting ain’t what it used to be.

Today, I imagine it would be difficult to find a painter who could competently execute a fresco at all.

Perhaps — inter-field study has diminished? Fewer renaissance people, too much bureaucracy and competition dictating the shape of every field. Unsure how you would determine whether this is true, but if it is it’s probably important.
-
I suspect even there Andy is right, with more people knowing more about more fields. It's just that people who in previous times would have been considered expert in multiple fields today look like dilettantes, since the bar for being considered an expert is much higher.
