Yes on the feeling! The way you framed it made me think. If I had stopped working on it, then I could frame it that way too. But I'm putting ego in the thing, I'd be happy if someone builds it successfully, but also sad.

Sometimes we need to make it in multiple different ways to get to a working version. So of course you need to continue working on it. The way I see it, it's not who makes it first, but if one (person or community) of us can get to making it for everyone else.

This allows my to work on the problem from my own perspective without being too distracted by the decisions others take, similar or not.

By the way I'm also working on a "tool for thought". And, it leverages also (but not only) spaced repetition
. Who knows where it's going. And also who knows if we'll see similar patterns and collaborate some day.1 reply 0 retweets 1 like -

I totally agree, competition can be win-win for everybody, we could all learn from each others and expand interest and accessibility of the tools. I'm curious, what kind of tool for thought are you building? If you're ready to share that info.

It’s basically a zettelkasten, where the atoms that compose it are compact (flash card size). But my focus is the interface. It’s designed for easy remix and mashup of ‘cards’.

I’m also considering spaced repetition to “upload” cards to your brain. And also “spaced degradation” for decluttering of things that you repeatedly express disinterest for.

I've never heard of "spaced degradation"! How would it work?

I coined the word. But I think it was
@andy_matuschak who talked about something similar when he describes the strategy of having a list of questions and decluttering the list by having the questions shown to you in increasing intervals if you feel ‘naah’ about it.1 reply 0 retweets 0 likes -
I gotta try that! I wonder if it'll work or it will reinforce "just press Remember to avoid seeing this for a while and to go on with your day". If it works, I wonder how much the exponential spacing plays a role in making it work.

It's been quite a generative general-purpose interaction. Some related notes in this vicinity:https://notes.andymatuschak.org/Spaced_repetition_can_lower_the_stakes_around_destructive_inbox-maintenance_operations …
