So I'm really curious about but I *just* got going with and honestly I'm pretty happy with it. Am I missing something? How do they compare?

They're very different, though they both appear to be basically text editors. Bear's conceptual model is roughly a filing cabinet; it's trying to be a very highly-polished digital one. Roam's concerned with expressing specific answers to "how are ideas developed over time?"

Roam reifies some interesting, potentially-powerful ideas about knowledge production!
I use Bear as part of a system exploring ideas in a similar neighborhood, but it's certainly not what it wants to do: I use lots of hacks to do what I'm doing.

If I weren't doing my own research on questions in knowledge systems (which necessitates tinkering with my own), and if I weren't allergic to doing serious work in webapps, I'd likely use Roam instead!
