-- It hasn't changed/innovated since release.
-- No startup has a chance against Amazon's monopoly (manufacturing, partnerships with publishers, & demand/distribution).

I had a chance to grill a former Kindle PM recently about exactly this topic, hoping that they could help me see some conceivable "in," but they were adamant that it was next to impossible to do anything here given Amazon's presence. A dispiriting conversation!
That’s really interesting (if depressing). If you have ideas for plausible plan of attack I’d of course be curious :)
If they only had the expertise and the resources... Oh wait.
