Just a little bit curious, but what is theory of not using "sidenote" but [1], [2], citation notation? The latter used to be classical but Tufte popularized sidenotes and your other essays used to use it. Does the use of [] have something to to with the style?

Ah, thank you for asking! That actually was something we went back and forth about. I think that style feels good when the marginal content is mostly side notes many people would likely read (ours are mostly cites) and when the content is reasonably dense (we have very few).

Thanks! And I actually did not click on them until now but it does show what I was expecting when I do that. (I was afraid of taken to a different place). I can see that it is a tradeoff between the touch vs pointing device issue.
