Still one of my favorite posts: https://www.google.com/amp/ryanhoover.me/post/66778907266/blogging-vs-building/amp … There's a time to explore, and a time to execute. God grant me the wisdom to know the difference

Nice post; thank you! I also struggle with explore/exploit tradeoffs… but something about the tension I feel in these statements isn't captured by that dichotomy. For instance: sometimes when I need to explore, "butt in chair" really does help!

One model I like for thinking about such questions: working at the edge of your abilities means your models of yourself start to break down; you're doing something you haven't done before. This is _why_ it can be so hard to make judgement calls between 1, 2 (or something else)
-
For that reason it's good to pay attention to how things are going, & rotate. When something's working well, keep going. When it's only working moderately, try other models of working, and try to find something which works. Which sounds trite; I only wish I did it consistently!

I find agenda-free walks super generative (solo or w/ friends). When I have thoughts + intuition I like, I block out the world w/ headphones and hand write. Feels like writing generates through clearer thinking while walking generates through looser free association. I need both

You're basically facing: "1. Breathe in 2. Breathe out Choose." Instead, maybe they're not independent aphorisms but one single one - they are part of each other.

Whoa, what an outstanding response. That's such a perfect and productive metaphor.

My algorithm is to try the other when one is not working.

Super interesting question, found through a search for another tweet. If I'm stuck on a problem while butt in chair, I do a quick review of my notes, outline a couple questions, and then go on a walk with my voice recorder. By the time I'm back I'm usually in an expansive state.
-
Then I'm butt in chair for a while, but I don't limit myself to one topic, which helps me keep the expansive state. For the past 4-5 months, that's been reliably captured into this process. How has your thinking on this changed since first tweeting?https://www.roambrain.com/brainstorming-with-myself-systematic-creativity-in-roam/ …
